Yeah, I saw this in one the developer Q&As. Guess you have to hope you don't catch a megapiranha. Think I'll still to fishing with my new bear.

Maybe they're intending to implement some sort of "sprite-less" fish?

At the moment it's easier to just rampage through the shallows with a predator.

It actually looks almost useful, as long as you have a good quality fishing wotsit.
You get blueprints and rarer mats from the process.... as well as fish.
Still not sure I have that much patience though.
